Mothered Forever: Creating a Legacy of Love and Wisdom for Your Daughter
Mothered, Always: How My Loss Inspired a Notebook for You
By Kinyatta Gray
There’s a word that often gets used to describe women like me who’ve lost their mothers: “motherless.” It’s a word I’ve never been able to embrace. To me, it feels dismissive, as though it erases my mother’s profound spiritual presence in my life. While my mom is no longer here in the physical sense, she remains with me every day—in my decisions, in my thoughts, and in my heart.
Still, I’ve come to accept a hard and layered truth: October 2018 marked the end of being mothered as I knew it. That reality was another painful dimension of my loss. It meant no more phone calls to hear her voice, no more shared laughter over her favorite TV shows, no more advice about everything from cooking to navigating life’s toughest decisions.
Standing on My Own Two Feet
As the days turned into months, I realized I had to stand on the sturdy, solid feet my mother had so carefully prepared for me. I was fortunate—my mother was a woman of immense wisdom, and she shared so much of it with me. I gleaned countless lessons from her example, from the way she carried herself with grace to how she handled life’s challenges with strength.
But here’s the bittersweet truth: all that she had shared with me would be all I would ever receive. As much as I remembered, I often found myself wondering what else she might have said if she’d had more time. How would she have mothered me through the moments she didn’t get to witness?
Mothering Beyond the Physical
I never sought mothering from anyone else after my mom passed. At my age, I felt I had what I needed to survive, and besides, no one could ever, ever replace my Miss Bee. But the idea of extending a mother’s love and wisdom beyond her physical presence began to take root in my heart.
That’s where the inspiration for my latest printable notebook, For When You Need Me Most, was born. This notebook is for mothers who want to continue mothering their children long after they’re gone. It’s for the women who know that their love, guidance, and wisdom should extend far beyond their lifetime.
